CURRICULUM

We use both teacher-directed and child-initiated learning, with an emphasis on responding to children’s learning styles and building on their strengths and interests. Young children learn best by doing; therefore, we strive to create a Christ-centered atmosphere to help children become independent, self-confident, inquisitive, and enthusiastic learners through developmentally appropriate, hand-on learning experiences. Our goal is to nurture the total child spiritually, socially, emotionally, intellectually, and physically and to instill a love of learning in a Christian environment.

  • LEARNING CENTERS

Children learn by doing. During this time, children participate in activities such as dramatic play, blocks, cars, trucks, trains, play-doh, puzzles, art, science, reading, writing, etc.

  • ART

The children express themselves with art each day. Art activities involve many things such as drawing, coloring, painting, cutting, gluing, etc.

  • BIBLE STORY / MEMORY VERSE

As we “adventure through the bible” the children learn a story from the bible each week. They also learn a simple memory verse that goes along with the bible story.

  • CIRCLE TIME

Circle time involves the whole class. The children discuss and learn about the calendar and weather, days of the week & months of the year, colors, shapes, letters of the alphabet, letter sounds, etc. They also discuss their weekly bible story and bible verse. This is also a time for nursery rhymes, singing, and just having fun learning!

  • WEEKLY THEME

Each class has a weekly theme as their focus for the week.

  • PHONEMIC AWARENESS | PHONICS | MATH | SCIENCE

These areas are focused on daily during learning centers, circle time, work time, etc. A strong foundation in each of these areas is a strong predictor of successful learners throughout school.

  • FINE & GROSS MOTOR SKILLS

These are important preschool skills learned daily through fun, hands-on activities.

  • LIBRARY

Jacob’s Ladder is fortunate to have a beautiful library filled with lots of wonderful books. Each class visits the library once a week. During this time, the children have fun listening and reading stories. The children also choose a book of their own and take it back to their classroom. The teacher and children enjoy reading all of their books throughout the week.

  • GYM TIME

‘Gym Time for Jacob’s Ladder” is a developmentally appropriate structured PE program for preschoolers including activities that improve coordination, gross-motor skills, etc. while also involving listening and academic skills.  The children participate in “Gym Time” once a week in the Arbor.

  • MUSIC

Music and movement provide an outlet for children’s high spirits and creative energy. Research proves that music is very important for brain development. The children learn songs, play musical instruments, and games during music class twice a week.

  • SANCTUARY

The children gather in the sanctuary every Wednesday morning. Brother Todd leads the children in a “mini” worship service. During this time, the children sing songs they have learned in music, they recite the Lord’s Prayer, and Brother Todd has a devotion that goes along with the bible story they have learned in class.

  • COMPUTER

Each classroom is equipped with a computer for the children. The children are able to learn the basics about the computer while playing fun, educational games.

  • OUTDOOR PLAY

If weather permits, the children go outside each morning and afternoon. Preschoolers are sensory-motor learners. In addition to the health benefits, playing outside stretches children’s imagination and knowledge. Children need coordination and an opportunity to practice basic physical skills. Outdoor play also allows children to move freely and make noise.
